Walk a Tradeshow Like a Pro

Tradeshows take place year-round, but they are most plentiful in January and July. Follow these tips for a fun and profitable visit to a tradeshow.
1. Plan to stay for the entire show so you can pace yourself. If you can't stay for the entire show, consult the show directory or website to select the events and vendors that are most beneficial to your business.
2. Examine your inventory and make a list of your business needs. I often alternate my days between attending seminars and visiting the showroom floors.
3. Check on the requirements to attend and gather your credentials before you leave home. It's easy to register on the Internet so your badge is waiting for you when you arrive.
4. Pack lots of business cards, even before your toothbrush. Most vendors won’t give you a catalog without a business card.
5. Carry a list of references and banking information if you want to open accounts.
6. Check out the Show’s floorplan to see where you need to start and spend the most time.
7. Wear comfortable clothes and shoes and dress in layers.
8. Drink lots of water, and plan rest stops and breaks before you need them..
9. Eat a full breakfast before you start your day. It'll put you in a much better mood, and make taste testing clashing samples less risky.
10. Carry fruit slices for snacking as you go.
11. Make notes and consider how you will sell inventory before buying it.
12. Avoid making impulsive decisions. Postpone placing orders until you’ve compared companies and prices, checked show specials, and considered shipping costs.
