This week's tip: Want to Succeed? Then Get Busy!

I'm often consulted by newcomers to the gift basket business. They want to know how to get started, or they wonder if they can succeed in business. When I share my ideas and experience with them, some accuse me of being too negative, or sounding glib or being discouraging. But others take what I share and build successful businesses. What's the difference? Those who succeed face the reality that success takes work and they get busy. Here's what I've learned.
1. You must have a vision of where you want to be when you succeed. The details of how to get there will unfold as you go.
For years I've wanted to remodel my kitchen and family room to make them more user friendly. I visualized what life would be like in my new space. But since I was just coming out of a period of financial setback I wasn't even sure if I could land the refinancing loan I needed. But with my vision firmly in place the loan and contractors all fell into place, and in record time.
2. You must learn from people who have already accomplished what you want to achieve.
Just one conversation with another mom who was working on her doctoral degree gave me the courage to begin my own doctoral studies. It's best, however, to have a mentor or mastermind group with whom you can exchange ideas.
3. You must be willing to focus so hard on what you are doing that you forget the time.
When I'm engaged in a project I sometimes even forget to eat. I'm not recommending this, but just sharing what happens to me.
4. You must be willing to do what it takes to reach your goal.
Now this may sound too obvious to even mention. But it's true. Many years ago when my kids watched Mr. Rogers, one of his popular songs was "You've Got to Do It." The gist of this seemingly simple song was that you can make believe, wish or daydream about what you want, but for something to happen you've go to take action.
5. You must be willing to be alone.
I love having dinner parties, chatting on the phone and going out. But I also love my own company. It's only when all outside stimulation is silenced that some of my best ideas surface.
6. You must be willing to fail.
The unwillingness to fail or be rejected is what causes us to procrastinate. We keep holding back waiting for things to be perfect. I love to research and think things through, but you must let these ideas, projects, or activities be born, no matter what the outcome. I decided long ago that when I'm sitting in my rocking chair sporting my gray hairstyle and recounting my life story I'd much rather talk about the many things I had tried that didn't work than about the many things I wanted to do but never had the courage to do.
