Today's Tip: Get Timely Gift Basket Ideas for Mom
 
Two weeks before Mother's Day last year I decided to bake a pound cake.

(For whatever reason I've gotten interested in perfecting my pound cakes lately.)
 
So I gathered my ingredients and began mixing the batter with my trusty handheld mixer. Things were going great until one of the beaters stopped turning.
 
(I need to mention that I had been eyeing the Kitchen Aid mixers in the store and on the Internet, but had convinced myself that I didn't bake often enough to merit the expense.)
 
Thinking that I had inserted it incorrectly, I took the uncooperative beater out, wash off the batter, dried and reinserted it. This time I'm sure it was in correctly.
 
I resumed mixing the batter only to be rewarded by both beaters refusing to turn any longer. I had to face reality. This handheld mixer had died an ill-timed death. I removed both beaters, and proceeded to mixing the old fashioned way: with a big spoon.
 
Just then my adult son walked into the kitchen and noticed I was mixing the cake batter by hand. "What happened?" he inquired.
